I started learning guitar in November 2020, and I decided to do it because I’m a huge Ramones fan.
Well… let’s get straight to the point.
On YouTube you can find many video lessons on how to play Ramones, but a lot of them use Power Chords. Which makes it much easier for beginners. However, in this article I’ll compile information on how Johnny Ramone actually played the Ramones songs.

Also on YouTube you can find videos of people doing guitar covers, like woodyamsterdam. On this channel Woody Amsterdam does covers of various bands, but mostly Ramones.
In one of his videos he explains how to play Ramones the right way. In that video he covers the topic of Barre Chords, the chords that Johnny used in practically every song. Johnny mostly used major barre chords, in some songs he used open chords, and on rare occasions minor chords.
Another interesting channel is Hardly Ramone. He covers Ramones album by album, which is really cool. And in some videos he explains Johnny Ramone’s technique, like in this video. The description of this video even has a Q&A with the most common beginner questions.
Tips
- Always downstrokes.
- Always Barre Chords.
- Try to always add “vibration” to your strumming.
- Lower your guitar strap, so that only your wrist moves when strumming.
